Enjoy the traditional chalet experience in Switzerland, France & Austria
If you are looking for a traditional ski holiday experience then I highly recommend booking one of the many chalets in France Switzerland or Austria where the old school charm of a wooden cabin will provide the essence of a true Alpine adventure.
These three countries have a steep history in skiing but chalets were around long before the ski holiday became popular. Due to the cold temperatures in the Alps and the copious availability of wood from local forests, the wooden built chalets were a natural resource with which to build shelter. Thus the chalet became the norm in the Alps and soon spread across France, Austria and Switzerland.
What is a Chalet?
A chalet is a wooden built property with a distinctive style consisting of a sloping roof with wide eaves set at 90 degree angles to help keep the snow away from the house. This type of building is traditionally associated with Switzerland although the trend soon spread to neighbouring countries such as France and Austria. These types of buildings were traditionally used as farm houses in the summer months and were often left empty during winter. The name ‘chalet’ is derived from Latin and Sanskrit words for ‘shelter’. In modern times, chalets are often used in the tourism industry to provide accommodation for visitors who flock to the mountains to indulge in winter sports or leisure. However these days you will find a chalet is repurposed to provide modern living facilities and can feature all the luxuries of a modern house. These types of properties are becoming more popular than hotels when visiting the Swiss, French and Austrian mountains because they offer convenient living arrangements, privacy and can cost less to stay in than a traditional hotel.
Powder White operates over 55 chalets in the Alps and have over 10 years experience running these types of properties. When you rent a chalet, you can choose to have your stay catered or self catered. A fully-catered chalet will come with a host or hostess who will cook breakfast, tea and dinner and take care of all the housekeeping. A Self Catered chalet will mean that you will be responsible for cooking yourself although some level of housekeeping may be provided.
