Alpe d'Huez Activities
Alpe d'Huez, like all other ski resorts, is mainly about skiing, but it does have plenty of alternatives for those non skiers or those looking for something extra. There are some fantastic facilities in Alpe d'Huez including swimming pools and ice. Here are a few ideas.
Walking or Snow Shoeing
Alpe D'Huez's location at the heart of Oisans and Ecrines National park makes it ideal for those who would rather go walking than skiing. There are hundreds of kilometres of markde trails including idyllic rambles or more challenging hikes. A map showing these walks is available from the Tourist Office. No particular equipment is needed, but some walking poles are a good idea for the steeper and icier patches.
Snowshoes allow you to walk through deeper snow and therefore enjoy a great area of terrain. You can go with a local guide and explore hidden parts o f the valley. Glacier walking is a truly unique experience that provides breath taking views and a real sense of adventure. For a guide for both snowshoeing and glacier walking (highly advised) contact Bureau des Guides de L Alpe D'Huez.
The Ice Cave
Situated at 2,700m and accessible via the Grandes Rousses DMC lift, this cave was dug into by two mountain guides. Sculptors skilled in the ice art change its appearance every year. This year's theme is ancient Greece.
