St Anton - Eating on the Mountain
Something quite special
Hopiz Alm +43 (0) 5446 2611
In the centre of St Christoph (20 mins from St Anton by bus), it is located just before the St Christoph 4-man chairlift, at the bottom of Blue 8. Out of town but definitely worth the trip for a special occasion. Original, rustic, stylish; the Hospiz alm serves authentic Tyrolean food with warm and careful hospitality. The Hopiz has the largest collection of large wine bottles in the world, with tours of the cellar available upon request. The buzzing Hospiz Alm is also famed for its slide down to the toilets.
Ulmerhuette +43 (0) 5446 30200
Take the Arlenmähder 6-man chairlift, ski down Blue 12 (Ulmerhütte) and it's on the left. No Pedestrian access. Children will need to be strong skiers and there is only a small selection on the menu. You really feel in the heart of the Arlberg at this mountain hut. Almost-360° views over the sweeping pistes. Open 9.30am-4.30pm.
A great Austrian restaurant
Rodelalm +43 (0) 699 10858855
Located by following the signs saying Rodelbahn from Gampen. The Rodelalm is half way down the track on the right-hand side. This is a truly great Austrian experience for young, old, first-timers and the experienced. It is an original Tyrolean mountain hut with an open fireplace, and a beautiful sun terrace. Specialities include pork shanks, Tyrolean Grostl and spare ribs. Open 10am-5pm on normal days, 10am-11pm Tues & Thurs - but check if open on snowy days as heavy snow covers the track. Definitely not for vegetarians or children as no real menu although they may do smaller portions.
Mooserwirt +43 (0) 5446 3588
Located near the end of the home-run, Blue 1 (Zammermoos-St Anton). Pedestrians can catch the bus (line 3) up to the Mooserkreuz stop then follow the road towards the piste (it is well-signed). Set in a traditional building, the serving area extends outside to the famous round ice-bar, Open between 11am and 8pm, be there before 3pm or it's impossible to get a seat amongst hundreds of tipsy, dancing skiers!
Eat amongst the clouds
Verwallstube +43 (0) 5446 2352501
Located at the top of the Galzigbahn (2085 meters above sea level), this restaurant is the highest gourmet restaurant in the world. It is in a class of its own, an expensive table-service restaurant with all the trimmings. Taste the flavour of the sea, with fresh fish from the Paris fish market; roasted monkfish under rocket Neuhold crust served on fennel-celery vegetables and saffron sauce. Fine culinary specialities also include pasta with fresh truffles or truffle risotto, which you can enjoy with the fine wines on offer. This can all be enjoyed on the magnificent sun terrace.
Best place to pick up a spicy rib
Taps +43 (0) 5446 2628
Located next to the Krazy Kanguruh, Taps restaurant is a firm favourite, the food is very good. Popular opinion has it that they do the best ribs on the mountain, they also have a selection of gourmet burgers. You can enjoy the waitress service whilst you bask in the sun and soak up the atmosphere.
