What's Vaujany like?

Vaujany is every bit the tranquil ski retreat. The village has just a few small shops, a supermarket and a 1,000 year old church amongst the rural barns and farmhouses. The area became wealthy in the 80s when it sold a chunk of land to France's hydro-electric scheme which was invested wisely in the ski area and leisure complex. installing a swimming pool and ice rink as well as a huge gondola linking the tiny village to the Alpe d'Huez ski area. This created one of the best backdoor resorts in the Alps - all the skiing and none of the noise of the big resorts.

Skiing in Vaujany

Immediately above Vaujany is the ski area of Montfrais with a handful of decent slopes and a good beginner area - with a magic carpet. You'll also find some decent (and quiet) powder runs here when the snow is good. The main attraction, however, is via the 160 person cable car which will whisk you up to the 248km of Alpe d'Huez including the 16km black Serene run and countless off piste terrain. There's also a huge bowl perfect for learning to ski here and intermediates can easily cruise between the villages on wide open mellow pistes.

Apres Ski

Vaujany is not a resort for the party animals amongst you. But if you're looking for plenty of skiing by day and relaxing around a fire mulling over your snowy conquests by evening then you'll love it. A place to avoid the drunken revelers and ideal for families with the leisure complex including a swimming pool and ice rink. There's also tobogganing and ice caves to explore.

Pistes in Vaujany

The Montfrais area directly above Vaujany has a great beginner run serviced by a covered magic carpet as well as a handful of decent runs and some wonderfully empty off piste routes. However, the bulk of the ski area is at the other end of the gondola. Here you'll find extensive progression terrain and some fantastically long cruising runs between the villages. Experts also have their hands full with a 16km black run amongst others and plenty to explore off piste with a guide.
