The first purpose-built ski resort in the Italian Alps, Sestriere was first developed by Fiat in the 1930s as a weekend retreat for the factory workers. The two hotel towers still dominate the ski resorts skyline and have become a symbol of the village. The 2006 Winter Olympics brought a lot of improvements to the resort and whilst it may not be the prettiest ski village in the Alps it makes up for it in height at a lofty 2,035m. Plus, at just over 1.5 hours drive from Turin airport, the resort is easily accessible with such a short transfer, making weekend skiing an attractive possibility here as well.
Though not as lively as neighbouring Sauze d'Oulx, Sestriere still has a good choice of bars for your post-ski tipple. The resort gets much more lively at the weekends when locals from Turin make their way to the mountains. Sestriere is popular with families with plenty of non-ski activities on offer from ice skating to dog sledging, an indoor golf course, sledging and even paintball.

Sestriere gives you fantastic access to one of the largest ski areas in the world. The Milky Way has 400km of lift linked pistes easily accessible from central Sestriere, the lively resort of Sauze d'Oulx is easy to get to and you can ski across the border into France and the resort of Mongenevre if you're feeling adventurous. The local slopes are varied with more than enough for any level of skier. The resort has a high altitude coupled with north-west facing slopes and great snowmaking equipment gives Sestriere a reputation for great snow conditions.
Ski lesson prices are almost half of that you'll find in the big French resorts, making the resort a great place to learn to ski or simply top up on technique.
There are plenty of beginner runs around the resort with the Manovia run reserved specifically for beginners. Intermediates have the majority of the ski area to explore and some of the toughest runs are over on Mt Sises.
